THE PROGRESS CENTRE FOR EARLY INTERVENTION

The Progress Centre provides a service aimed at facilitating the development of infants from birth to school age, who are disabled, or "at risk" for developmental delay. Research has shown that intervention at an early age has benecial eects for both children and their families. Case workers work with parents at home and in the centre. The purpose is to provide a range of stimulation and activities for the parents to carry out with the child, as well as support services and training for the parents.

An important aspect of the Progress Centre is to help parents develop realistic expectations and plan activities in their homes that may promote their child's development. Parents also have the opportunity to meet other parents with similar problems for educational purposes and emotional support. Other services provided include a resource centre oering: referral services for those children needing professional consultation for speech, hearing or physiotherapy; an extensive up-to-date library of books, journals and other written materials; and a complete toy library which will assist the child's learning and skill development.
